Wizardom: “My new single, Unique Soul, celebrates that all 8 billion plus humans on this planet are all unique, and to embrace that”
Melbourne-based independent artist Giuliano Avedikian, better known as Wizardom, recently unleashed a brand new single called Unique Soul. It's the musician's first release since his 2023 debut album, and it takes listeners on an uplifting and transformative sonic journey. Rich, energetic, and hugely innovative, it's a tune I've fallen extremely hard for.
Intrigued to learn more about Giuliano's artistry, I was grateful when he accepted our request for an interview. Chatting with us about his early years as an acting and saxophone student, what changes he'd love to see made to the music industry, and what fans can expect from him going forward, please give a warm welcome to our new friend Giuliano Avedikian, AKA Wizardom!
Hi Giuliano, thanks so much for taking the time to chat with us! I’m so excited to introduce you to our ever-expanding audience! What first drew you to music, and how did you discover your passion for it?
Thank you for having me.
I wanted to be an actor when I was young, but I didn't think I was good enough because I'm quiet and thought all actors were extraverts. In my '20s, I decided to give acting a go by doing a performing arts course. I learnt acting, voice and the saxophone. They suggested trying singing classes. I didn't have a good voice, but I gave it a go. I fell in love with it, as I realised I had a big voice and could express myself rather than be someone else. I then stopped my pursuit of acting and the saxophone to focus on music.
I’m a sucker for having to know the origins of a band or artist’s name. I just can’t help myself! How exactly did Wizardom come about?
I love all things fantasy and wizard/magic, eg Harry Potter, Merlin, etc. It must have been in my consciousness around 2017/2018, when the idea and name for Wizardom came in my dreams. The name mixes fantasy themes as well as my love for the spiritual/esoteric with the play on word of "wisdom".
OK, now, onto your brand new single, Unique Soul. A bold and uplifting anthem that fuses synth-pop with immersive elements of EDM, what emotions were you channelling when you wrote this piece?
I have never felt I fit into society, both creatively and personally (still don't), and I realised the importance of all of us embracing our uniqueness, or in my case, my weirdness as well. We are not supposed to conform and just fit in and be normal (unless you want to).
Unique Soul celebrates that all 8 billion plus humans on this planet are all unique and to embrace that. It also asks the question, "How will you show your uniqueness today?". It can be in small or grand ways, but just express yourself and be authentic.
Now, I’m sorry to pose such a tough question, but what song of yours would you select to skyrocket to the top of the charts and achieve massive success?
That is a tough question. It is so subjective and out of my control which song takes off. Some songs could connect now or years later as my profile grows. My first album was quirkier, and not everyone understood the songs, so at this stage, it would be songs from my next album. Either the first single, Unique Soul, or some of my completed upcoming songs that have not been released yet, that have good vibes and messages that I feel will resonate.
Who are some of your biggest musical influences? Who did you grow up listening to? And would you say that your tastes have changed over the years?
My tastes are varied. I love '50/'60s because of my dad. In my performing arts course, we had to learn ballads, pop, rock, musicals, jazz, R&B, Frank Sinatra style/crooner music and more, so that helped me appreciate many styles and eras.
I grew up in the '80s, so my favourite music is from then. The '80s had all styles of music from pop, rock, and synth stuff, and was less dominated by rap/R&B. The music was uplifting, sometimes novelty and even the power ballads were atmospheric.
After the '80s, I still like music from the '90s and 2000s+. For an older artist, I even like some of the modern stuff. As an Australian, I was inspired by Australian artists such as Icehouse and INXS, but also loved Michael Jackson, Prince, US pop and rock, English pop/rock, U2, Def Leppard, etc. More recently, I love the electronic stuff of Empire of the Sun, Coldplay, etc.
I still love the old stuff but my tastes have grown and adapted as I get older and listen to varied stuff and go on new artist exploration. I am influenced by the material of my youth.
Which of your lyrics would you like to see printed on a T-shirt?
There are plenty of good messages in my songs that would go well on a t-shirt.
My tagline, "Follow your magic", is the obvious one, but it is not a lyric.
One off the top of my head would be from Unique Soul: "We’re unique souls. How will you show it today?" Might be too long to fit though lol!
What are your thoughts regarding the music industry of today? And, if you were able to, what changes would you make to it?
The music industry is not in the best place. We have to be careful of how AI is used and hope it doesn't dilute the music with generic content (I do get the help of AI in the promotion and design elements).
I don't like the lack of support from the big platforms, eg Spotify (I do use it as a listener), who take most of the cut of an artist's income. I know in Australia our live music is not getting supported like other industries with not much funding.
Also, the lack of diverse genres on the radio and charts, especially in Australia. It is too dominated by rap and R&B (I like some of it, but not my favourite genre). I'd love more pop, rock and other genres to be supported.
I do love how artists now can get a global opportunity to express themselves and do it independently without the need for a music label. It is up to us artists to help bring change and express our uniqueness and authenticity. I'd love artists to get more income and a bigger cut of their creative expression/art.
Thanks again for taking the time to chat with us Giuliano! It’s been awesome getting to know you better! Before we say farewell, what comes next for you musically?
I aim to release my second single from July onwards, and I'll have a number of singles before releasing an album. Also, a return to performing is on the cards. It's been a while.
Also, with Wizardom and my umbrella business/projects, Unique Creations, I will be sharing non-music items as well, eg books, events, courses, etc, to share my messages.
I loved chatting with you, and thanks for promoting Unique Soul.
