At the beginning of this year, I discovered a tune called Loose Change (Gone Electric). Courtesy of Paul Jenner, a London-based artist who records as 50mething, the wonderfully unpretentious track was a total breath of fresh air. Granted, Paul was dealing with a serious subject, but the sonic side of things never took itself too seriously.
Ever since then, I've kept a close eye (and ear) on 50mething's releases, which, believe me, is not an easy feat. The musician has delivered thirty-three singles since that first encounter, the most recent being Make Us Pay For It. - a song I am honoured to share with you today.
"I've always been a big fan of Prince and Stevie Wonder," admits Paul - setting the scene for the vibrant, rhythmic journey he's about to send you on. Upbeat, groovy, and dripping in funky goodness, Make Us Pay For It. comes strutting out of the gates, channelling a punchy, vintage sound that's essentially irresistible.
Just like Loose Change, 50mething's latest offering uses a buoyant soundscape to deliver an important message. Taking aim at the food industry and the junk they put into their products, Paul continues his sonic crusade for truth-telling. Playful, lighthearted, yet much sharper than it first appears, Make Us Pay For It. says what needs to be said, without ever killing the vibe!
