Magdi Aboul-Kheir Takes His Retro-Futuristic Sound Further on New Album Replicant Dreams
German-based composer Magdi Aboul-Kheir has been one seriously busy musician this year. In fact, he just released album number seven! Titled Replicant Dreams, Magdi's latest offering is a collection of nine tunes, and he describes it as a "grand retro-futuristic sonic adventure." It's a bold description, but based on what I've heard from Magdi before, I'm pretty confident he'll have the chops to pull it off.
A spiritual sequel to Yesterday's Future, a record I was proud to label a "high-speed trip down memory lane", Replicant Dreams takes things a step further and delivers a more expansive and cinematic atmosphere. Elements of synthwave meet soaring orchestral passages, while propulsive grooves keep things flowing at an easy pace, giving the music a wonderfully gentle sense of momentum.
Tunes like Orbital Beauty and the album's title track showcase the artist's beautifully mellow, softer sonic side. But then come compositions like the dark and haunting Cyborg Legion, or the epic, dramatic sounds of Deep Space Departure. It's in these moments, I believe, that one really begins to appreciate just what a gifted composer Magdi is.
A prolific sonic innovator, Magdi Aboul-Kheir has already built up an impressive body of work - and that's good news for anyone who's enjoyed this latest offering!
