Rosetta West’s Gravity Sessions Album Is a Front-Row Seat to the Storm
Rosetta West have become a familiar favourite around these parts, and in truth, it's been an honour to champion their work. Seeing a tune like Snake 25 go from a handful of listens to now nearing 60,000 plays on Spotify is pure validation for the band. And hey, not to toot my own horn, but it’s nice to know my gut was onto something.
Gravity Sessions is Rosetta West's brand new album, and it's one I've been eagerly awaiting to hear, having recently featured the record's raw and gritty first single, Dora Lee (Gravity). Heading into Chicago's revered Gravity Studios for a few days, the outfit set about recording a mostly live selection of fan favourites. Bluesy, dirty, and oh so powerful, the seven-track offering delivers a front-row seat to the unfiltered soul of Rosetta West.
From the hypnotic and eerie pull of a tune like Deeper Than Magic to the album's crunchy closer Venous Blue, Gravity Sessions covers a lot of sonic ground in its twenty-five minutes. It's heavy and unvarnished stuff, but that's Rosetta West in a nutshell.
Other personal favourites include Broken Glass and Baby Doll, but you know my suggestion these days: don't cherry pick - take the ride from start to finish.
