Still High… Finds Raw Soul Crafting Deeply Atmospheric, Thought-Heavy Hip-Hop
Still High… is the reflective, immersive, and utterly absorbing new album from Raw Soul, an artist and rapper who prefers to keep the focus firmly on the music rather than the maker. Teaming up with three super talented producers in eeryskies, pilotkid, and bvtman, Raw Soul sets about concocting a nine-track offering of thoughtful, atmospheric, and beautifully detailed hip-hop. The entire record is weighty and moody and deeply sincere - the kind of album that reveals more the longer you live with it.
Inspired by gratitude for the opportunities he has been given as both a full-time lawyer and music-maker, Still High… reflects a rare duality. I mean, can you name any other lawyers who can go from drafting legal arguments to crafting some of the most emotionally authentic music around?
While acknowledging J. Cole, Kendrick Lamar, Mac Miller, and Nas as being influential to his sound, Raw Soul is ultimately shaped by his own lived experiences and challenges. You can hear it on every track, too - from the vulnerable truths of In Need (Of Healing) to the powerful resilience of Lenses.
Other personal favourites are Run Free, I'm Going (Letting Go), and To Whom It May Concern. That said, Still High… is unquestionably meant to be enjoyed back to front. A flawless record!
