ReeToxA is the brainchild of Jason McKee, a Melbourne-based songwriter who recently teamed up with producer Simon Moro to release some of his material. Bobbie, released in March last year, marked Jason's very first official single - and ever since, he's released a steady stream of material. Much to my delight!

War Killer began my love affair with ReeToxA, and Love Keeps Burning Still just sealed the deal. Two tunes that couldn't be more different to one another, yet both unmistakably ReeToxA.

Deciding it was well past time to have a proper chat with Jason, I was stoked when he agreed to an interview! Chatting with us about his and the band's sonic inspirations, why he considers making art for a living one of life's greatest rewards, and what listeners can expect to hear on the upcoming album, please welcome Jason McKee of ReeToxA!

Jason, thank you so much for being here! I'm really stoked to reintroduce you to our ever-expanding audience!

Now, for those unfortunate souls who have yet to discover the power of ReeToxA, what would you say they’re missing out on? How would you describe your music?

We are a modern version of Pearl Jam/Radiohead that covers every emotion you need for the current state of your life.

I’m sorry to pose such a tough question so early on, especially given the size of your discography, but if you could choose one song of yours to skyrocket to the top of the charts and achieve massive global success, which would it be and why?

I think THRIFT SHOP DRESS is a banger; it supports the underdogs of society and deserves recognition, I feel.

As you might recall, War Killer served as my introduction to your sound, and I believe you mentioned it was the first time you'd explored political themes in your songwriting.

Do you see political commentary becoming a bigger part of your music going forward, and do you think politically charged songs can still change hearts and minds?

The world is so divided at the moment, and I don’t want to fuel that. War Killer was a balanced statement that I’m proud of.

Our next album is mostly recorded, and it’s to bring fun back to the world. I am keen to expand my knowledge of politics after the great reception War Killer got.

Who would you say some of your biggest musical influences are, and who would I see under “Recently Played” on your streaming service of choice?

My all-time favourites are Nirvana, Pixies, Pearl Jam, Radiohead and Red Hot Chili Peppers. There is a lot of slap bass on the new record, and I have been practicing singing to it with funk lately lol.

Obviously, everyone defines success differently, so when you think about your own path in music, what would "being successful" in the industry really mean to you?

I think success is being able to quit my job and live off music even if it’s at a modest level.

What do you love most about being a musician? And on the flip side, what are some of the biggest challenges that you’ve faced so far?

The financial strain is the biggest challenge, but I love the freedom and joy it brings me. Doing art for a career is so rewarding.

How do you and the band navigate the delicate balance between staying true to your artistic vision and adapting to changing trends in the music industry?

Simon Moro helps us get a modern touch and edge. It’s important to stay true to yourself, but I don’t want to be a nostalgia act.

What comes next for you musically?

Our third album is nearly finished and should be out before Christmas. It’s a fun party album to bring peace to the world! You’d put it on at a BBQ or party, no problem!
