Between the Hazy Layers, Softer’s Beachball Might Just Be Their Breakout Moment

Released in February this year, Beachball is the hazy and atmospheric new single from Los Angeles-based outfit Softer, and it's a tune I'm finding myself returning to again and again. Full of depth and layers, it's a toughie to pin down genre-wise, but leans into dream pop, indie rock, and shoegaze territory.

Overflowing with jangly guitar riffs, dynamic drum work, and the ethereal vocals of Belinda Cai, it pulls you into a woozy and hypnotic current that doesn't let up until the last note. It's mesmerising stuff to be honest with you, and every listen reveals new textures hidden beneath the haze.

Reflecting on a space that is post-heartbreak and pre-starting over, Beachball delves into the pain of a toxic relationship. "It's about feeling deflated at times, regardless of how hard you try, but continuing to try to move on," says the band.

With influences ranging from The Breeders and Alvvays to Broken Social Scene and Sonic Youth, Softer seem determined to make 2025 their breakout year. They've already released a follow-up to Beachball in the form of IDK, and all I'll say is that it's further proof of an outfit ready to step into the spotlight.
