Gaia Algorithmica Introduces Beyond Signal as Sheffield’s Fearless Sonic Explorer

Released in the middle of last year, Gaia Algorithmica is the highly intriguing debut album from a Sheffield-based artist who performs under the moniker Beyond Signal. A nine-track offering of eclectic rock, electronica, and post-punk, it’s a smorgasbord of sounds and styles. That said, despite the variety, the record flows with a surprisingly sweet cohesion.

The Hypernornal begins proceedings. Dark, gritty and a little psychedelic, the absorbing opener sets the tone with murky textures and a magnetic pull, before making way for All in hand. A raw and eerie piece of rock brilliance, it's at this point that Beyond Signal's musical talents come into sharp focus.

Questions has a classic indie rock feel to it, and once again showcases the artist's effortless command over different genres. Anthemic and authentic, it's a real gem of a tune, and paves the way for the synthy and intense sounds of Wednesday.

Exploring themes of dysfunctional relationships, artificial intelligence and the quest for spiritual enlightenment, the remaining songs on Gaia Algorithmica are as gripping and inventive as their predecessors. So, with five more tracks to soak up and discover, my only suggestion is that you sit back and enjoy a truly impressive debut album from a seriously skilful musician. Special stuff!
