Hallucinophonics Stretch Space and Texture to Stunning Effect on New Single Frozen Meridian
The mission of London-based outfit Hallucinophonics is simple: to precisely articulate the hallucinogenic experience through music. It's the kind of concept that sounds amazing on paper, but pulling it off is another matter entirely. When you're chasing something this surreal and vast, it takes real discipline to keep the music grounded. Thankfully, that problem is not one associated with Hallucinophonics.
Earlier this year, I discovered their tune Afternoon of Acid Rain, a song that floats on a haze of timeless, kaleidoscopic textures. I instantly fell in love, and have kept up with the outfit ever since, bringing me neatly to Frozen Meridian, another of the band’s latest singles. Let's dive in!
A spatially ambitious composition, Frozen Meridian embraces negative space and expansive reverb chambers. Through clean guitar arpeggios, sparse brushed drums, and a truly haunting vocal performance, Hallucinophonics concoct a glacially-paced meditation that transforms Iceland's volcanic silence into hypnotic washes of tone and texture.
Exploring themes of isolation and transformation, Frozen Meridian unfolds slowly, pulling the listener deeper into its frostbitten haze with every passing minute. Simultaneously vast yet delicately intimate, it's one of the best tracks I've heard all year, and I simply can't wait to experience this talented bunch again! Ten out of ten!
