A Genre-Fluid Glow Runs Through Eleanor Murray’s Bold New Album PLAY LOVE
Centred on themes of young, girlish love - not as innocence, but as power - PLAY LOVE is the exceptional new album from Seattle-based singer/songwriter, producer, and designer Eleanor Murray. A ten-track offering that fuses intimate bedroom production with underground pop textures, Eleanor's latest record is as eclectic as it is compelling. From dreamy guitars to booming beats and synthesisers, she's an artist unafraid of boldly going where the music takes her, regardless of current trends or fads.
Just Like This begins proceedings gently, slowly drawing the listener in with sparse guitar work and the whispery, breathy vocals of its creator. It's a tender start and leads perfectly into Idle Time, another tune that embraces restraint, allowing Eleanor's wonderfully fragile vocals to take front and centre.
Opposite is an unexpectedly gritty and upbeat little number that gets the toes tapping, before its successor, I Feel Messy, enters the fray. A slow-burning and eerie piece of music, it's here that you really begin to get a sense of Eleanor's genre-fluid approach to songwriting.
Other favourites include Flames, Baby It's So Easy, and the album's hauntingly beautiful closer, I Like U. The truth, however, is this…if you're not experiencing PLAY LOVE in its entirety, you're seriously missing a trick! Superb stuff!
