John Beckmann and His Mortal Prophets Perfect Psychedelic Dream-Pop with Hide Inside The Moon

John Beckmann is, unquestionably, one of the most experimental musicians I’ve ever come across. Performing under the moniker Mortal Prophets, I have been fortunate enough to cover John's work for over two years, and I promise you that's no mean feat - he's also one of the most prolific artists around!

All that is to say, Mortal Prophets holds a very special place in my heart, so today, I am honoured to introduce you to John's latest album, Hide Inside The Moon. Let's dive in!

Inhabiting that magnetic space where psychedelic dream-pop and noir-cinematic pop collide, Hide Inside The Moon is an ambient and hazy adventure. Think early Pink Floyd with Syd Barrett: experimental, immersive, genius.

Through sixteen tracks, John and his revolving door of collaborators construct an album that feels more like a movie soundtrack than a traditional record. Rich with imagery and emotional depth, it's less focused on structure and more invested in mood, atmosphere, and what John has wonderfully labelled "a gentle psychedelic weather system."

Some personal favourites from the record include its dreamy opener, Mad Girls Love Song (Sylvia Plath), the hauntingly beautiful My Future Past, and the mind-bending, gloriously trippy sounds of Through Colors. That said, if you're not absorbing the album in its entirety, you're seriously missing a trick!
