Locked N Loaded Captures DJThriller’s Classic Instincts Through a Modern Lens
Early last year, I discovered the work of Joshua Hurst, a rapper and producer hailing from Los Angeles and performing under the moniker DJThriller. He'd just released a bold and inventive tune called Ain't Asking, and ever since, I've been keeping a close eye (and ear) on the artist. Before 2025 was over, Joshua had released his sophomore album, MODERN CHAOS, and it's the record's penultimate track I'd like to hone in on today. Let's dive in, shall we?
Working alongside Darrell K. Horn and Ibuchi Moses Mgbeke, better known simply as MOZS, DJThriller sets about concocting a cinematic, layered, and seriously soulful piece of music. With production hints of early Kanye West and lyrics delivered in a sharp, measured, Nas-like fashion, Locked N Loaded perfectly captures that tight, classic feel and presents it through a modern lens.
Recorded in a dorm room, showcasing the collective's raw and authentic approach to music, Locked N Loaded is another example of DJThriller's collaborative spirit. When you have a collection of young musicians creating off instinct and feeding off each other's energy, the result is usually something rather special.
Reflecting on the meaning behind his latest single, Joshua says that it reminds him that this journey isn't just about the highs. "It's about who's still there when things get quiet," he says.
