Love is Whys Marks a Triumphant and Thoughtful Return for Graham Price Gift Shop
Hailing from Brooklyn, Graham Price Gift Shop is the solo musical project of singer/songwriter and producer Graham Bishop. It's been a good five years since the artist last shared new music, but I think once you hear Love is Whys, you'll realise the wait has truly been worth it.
A ten-track offering that sees Graham teaming up with a ridiculously talented roster of other musicians, the sonically panoramic and introspective album is one of the best I've encountered this year.
Cherish Love gets things underway, a layered and hazy offering featuring the angelic vocals of Alexx Becker. It's a lengthy and dreamy start to proceedings, before the soulfully bluesy sounds of Home ooze through the speakers.
Lonely Too is an upbeat little gem I've fallen completely in love with. Partly because it's such a toughie to pin down genre-wise, but more importantly, because it radiates pure creative confidence. Hypnotic and immersive, it's the sort of tune that leaves its melody in the corners of your mind.
Other personal favourites included the timeless wonder of Dolores, the delicate beauty of Come to Me, My Memory, and the record's unexpectedly gritty closer, We Fall in Line.
As for the inspiration behind his latest release, Graham says that "love truly is the reason why humans do anything…love or the lack of it." I've got to say, I'm with him there.
