Matthew Spreen Gives a Gentle Shrug to Life’s Difficult Truths on New Single Cheer Up!

Gearing up for the release of his new album, Montreal-based singer/songwriter Matthew Spreen recently unveiled Cheer Up!, the record's rich and intimate opener and lead single. Favouring texture and emotional depth over polished studio perfection, Matthew's latest release is a beautifully human and authentic piece of music. Through carefully placed samples, layered instrumentation, and the artist's warm, plaintive vocals, Cheer Up! cushions its heavy subject matter with lush melodies and an understated folk-pop charm.

"It's a song about collective acknowledgement of difficult truths," remarks Matthew. "Delivered not as a lament but as something closer to a resigned, affectionate shrug."

Offering what has been labelled as "the fullest introduction to Spreen's world," Cheer Up! is a prime example of Matthew's hands-on approach to songwriting. Taking care of the production, mixing, and mastering, he's a musician who's undeniably immersed in every corner of his craft.

Recorded at his home in Montreal on a two-channel Tascam and a twenty-year-old acoustic guitar, Cheer Up! is one of the most intriguing tunes I've heard in some time. It's honest and moving and messy - and sets the scene perfectly for Matthew's forthcoming album Particles, which, personally, can't arrive soon enough! Superb stuff!
