Progressive Rock Without a Safety Net - Discover Belling The Tiger's Epic EP Listen
Listen is an EP that comes courtesy of Belling The Tiger, a Detroit-based progressive rock outfit unafraid to colour outside the lines, so to speak. Released last year, and described as a record that "captures the formative stage of the band's evolution," the four-track offering is eclectic, inventive, and downright brilliant!
The EP's title track gets proceedings underway, and it's a six-and-a-half-minute epic that really makes its intentions clear from the outset: this is progressive rock without a safety net. Emotional and haunting, it's a whirlwind of sound, and leads the listener expertly into the more harmonic and almost ethereal world of No Wings For Myself.
Awareness of What's Missing is another grand and ambitious composition that embraces the spiritual and philosophical. A searching piece of music that moves from demand to surrender, the act explains that it's "an exploration of empathy, rebirth, and transcendence through movement and repetition."
Doina Din Maramureș rounds off Listen, and this is where things get really interesting. A reinterpretation of a Romanian folk song, it's a tune that offers a quiet resolution after the intensity of what has come before.
If you've found yourself swept up in this outstanding record, Belling The Tiger have since returned with a new EP, released this May. Titled Let the Rain, it's an album that doesn't disappoint!
