Rumour Den, the brainchild of longtime collaborators AJ Gilmore and Steve Simms, has undoubtedly been one of my favourite musical discoveries of the year. Based in Northern Ireland, the duo are gaining a reputation for exploring the darker corners of everyday life, expertly showcased in tunes like All In This Together and their upcoming, genre-bending anthem Shoot The Messenger.
Set to be unleashed on the world this Friday, Shoot The Messenger is a haunting, expansive, and seriously potent piece of music. A soaring, guitar-driven ride through shadowy southern storytelling, heavy alternative riffs, and a touch of gospel soul, Rumour Den's latest offering captures AJ and Steve at their absolute best.
Exploring the manipulation of truth and the way language often gets twisted, Shoot The Messenger was recorded alongside producer Frankie McClay and session drummer Eamon “Lenny” Lenehan. Intentionally avoiding standard formulas, the arrangement gives the track space to breathe and expand at its own pace - until eventually reaching its explosive crescendo.
The song will feature on the act's forthcoming album Relapse, a record that hopefully isn't too far off on the horizon. For now, though, there’s plenty to savour in what they’ve already delivered!
