Twenty Albums Later, Matt Smith Is Still Exploring New Sonic Ground on …this is not ok…

By the time an artist reaches album number twenty, “prolific” just doesn't seem like a strong enough word. Veteran? Musical workhorse? Call it what you want, I guess. The point is, you don't reach twenty records without a serious commitment to the craft. And that's where Texas-based songwriter, guitarist, and producer Matt Smith comes into play.

…this is not ok… is the latest addition to Matt's discography, a nine-track offering that's been described as "one of the most personal releases of his career." I am honoured to share it with you today.

Accompanied by an insanely talented collection of musicians and vocalists - far too many to name - Matt and co. serve up a rich mix of roots, blues, soul, rock, folk, and Americana. It's an eclectic listen, but it all comes together beautifully.

World is a Wheel sets the tone with a bluesy, timeless atmosphere before fading away and opening the door for Cry for America, a smoky, soulful critique of the current state of the USA.

Orphans showcases the more folky, introspective side to Matt's work, while its successor, Level Ground, leads the listener into what feels like the album's darkest and most haunting corner.

The remainder of …this is not ok… is just as compelling as what's come before, and I mean this with every sinew in my body: this is one of the standout records of the year!
