Wattmore Tap Into Lived Experiences and Raw Truths on It’s Called Love…It’s Called The Blues
For their first single of the new year, Brisbane-based duo Wattmore have teamed up with legendary country songwriter Allan Caswell to concoct a geniusly raw and stripped-back track. Titled It's Called Love…It's Called The Blues, it's a tune the two brothers who make up Wattmore have said leans into "emotional restraint, space, and clarity." Let's dive in!
Clocking in at four minutes, Wattmore's latest offering wastes no time - as a spacy, bluesy guitar riff slides in before Caswell's haunting spoken vocals are introduced. Building slowly and methodically, the song eventually metamorphoses into a dirty, bluesy, and hugely hypnotic piece of music. Built on lived experiences, and not kowtowing to current trends or studio tricks, It's Called Love… is as honest and real a song as I've heard in some time.
Reflecting on the experience of working with the two brothers, seventy-three-year-old Caswell says, "they're keeping me young." He also jokes that he's "doing his best to lead them astray," but in my humble opinion, the three musicians have stumbled upon a formula very much worth sticking with.
Five singles in, Wattmore have now laid the groundwork for something substantial, and my hope is they'll gift us an EP, or better yet, a full-length album!
