50mething Lets the Groove Carry the Message on Timely Tune Loose Change (Gone Electric)

50mething is the moniker of Paul Jenner, a West London-based independent artist who decided, at fifty-eight, it was time to enter the music business. An ex-dancer and garden builder, Paul first explored music-making in his mid-twenties, but as so often happens, life got in the way. Fast-forward to 2019, however, and Paul's love for recording was reignited, all of which leads me to one of his wonderful new singles, Loose Change (Gone Electric).

Delivering a sharp commentary on the evolving landscape of street crime through a somewhat playful and highly eclectic soundscape, Loose Change is the kind of tune that tackles a serious subject while still sounding like it’s having a bit of fun along the way. Stripped back of excess and refreshingly unpretentious, it's the perfect example of a statement track that realises, sometimes, all the sonic bells and whistles just aren't necessary.

With a love for heavyweights like Prince and Stevie Wonder, 50mething is only getting started on his musical journey. Promising more songs that deal with everything from the murder of George Floyd to the current conflicts in both Ukraine and Gaza, Paul Jenner clearly feels now is the right time to make his mark. Sadly, for the world, he's right, but at least he's stepping up and trying to make a change!
