DownTown Mystic Trades Riffs for a Bluesy, Piano-Driven Groove on New Single Maybe Love's A Crime
As one of our most featured musicians to date, New Jersey-based rocker Robert Allen feels more like a part of the furniture around here than just another artist we admire. The sonic visionary behind DownTown Mystic, Robert has delivered some of my favourite tunes over the past year, so it truly is a pleasure welcoming him back every time.
Maybe Love's A Crime signals DownTown Mystic's magical return, and to be perfectly honest, it's a surprising change of pace that caught me a little off guard. A bluesy, jammy, groove-driven number, the laidback track is built around a classic shuffle, provided by the elite rhythm section of drummer Steve Holley and bassist Paul Page.
Legendary keyboardist Jeff Levine also lends his talents to Robert's new single, treating listeners to a sensational piano performance that really gets the toes tapping. And while all this is happening, Robert's vocals keep things wonderfully grounded, as he brings just the right amount of grit to proceedings.
With Robert being a big Dion fan, it was fitting that Paul Page, having played with the artist himself, was the one who suggested the shuffle-like groove.
"When Paul said Dion, I knew exactly what he meant," says Robert. "It was perfect for the track and worked like a charm!" It sure did!
