John in Roses' Deep Sees Arn-Identified Flying Objects and Alien Friends Reimagine a Swedish Folk Classic
Based on an old Swedish folk song, John in Roses' Deep is another standout single from Arne Floryd's exceptional new album, The King and the Sparrow. Performing under the moniker Arn-Identified Flying Objects and Alien Friends, Arne released The King and the Sparrow in May this year, and it's a record I simply haven't been able to stop listening to ever since. The Sparrow began my love affair with the album, and today, I am honoured to share another favourite of mine.
Acoustic guitars, a harpsichord, and a mandolin establish an eerie, folky atmosphere. It immediately transports me to what I imagine a Renaissance fair would sound like, and before long, you're completely immersed in a world of folklore and mystery.
As the track progresses and the tension builds, you get a sense that the song is about to open up, and at the midway point, it very much does. Andreas Quincy Dahlbäck comes in on the drums, adding another layer of richness to proceedings, before an electric guitar pops up out of nowhere and sends the tune soaring to new heights.
Once more, I've been blown away by the genius of Stockholm-based singer/songwriter Arne Floryd. Then again, another great track hardly comes as a surprise anymore! Superb, as always!
