Martin Lloyd Howard's Highland Mist Is a Tranquil Escape From the Noise of the World
It feels like a lot of gentle instrumentals have been coming across my proverbial desk of late, and I promise you, I'm not complaining! The world feels so chaotic and ruthless and fractured - perhaps that's why these particular offerings have been hitting the right spot.
With that in mind, I'd like to introduce you to Surrey-based guitarist and composer Martin Lloyd Howard. A prolific musician with a serious back catalogue, today it's Highland Mist, one of his most recent compositions, that I'd like to share with you.
Clocking in at just over three minutes, Highland Mist is a solo guitar piece performed on a Tanglewood steel-string acoustic. Tuned to DADGAD, or Celtic tuning, the wonderfully serene and mystic arrangement was written with the intention of transporting the listener to the foggy Scottish Highlands. Mission accomplished! It's evocative and tranquil, and utterly absorbing from beginning to end.
Inspired by legendary guitarists like Jimmy Page (who also employed the DADGAD tuning), Dominic Miller, and Ritchie Blackmore (the Blackmore's Night years), Martin Lloyd Howard draws from a wonderfully diverse sonic palette. And that's what separates him from the rest. AI? You won't find it here. Just a guitarist, his guitar, and a pure, genuine love for the craft. Superb stuff!
