Mermaid Avenue Unveil Their Most Fully Realised Record to Date With Jacarandas

Named after the 1998 Billy Bragg and Wilco collaboration, Mermaid Avenue have been a fixture of the live music scene in Brisbane, Australia, for over ten years. They've released countless singles and albums, seen their tunes appear on soundtracks, and received international radio play. 

Built around the songwriting of frontman Peter Clarke, the outfit blends alt-country, indie rock, folk, and bluesy Americana into something distinctly their own. And all that, my friends, is where Jacarandas enters the fray, Mermaid Avenue's brand new record.

A ten-track offering, Jacarandas is a collection of songs the band released between 2023 and 2024 - kicking off with the guitar-driven, infectious gem Talk Pretty. Anthemic and laced with nostalgia, it's the perfect scene setter, before handing things over to the warm and inviting sounds of First Move.

The album's title track showcases that alt-country side of Mermaid Avenue with real grace, while its successor, More Than This, delivers a simultaneously intimate and expansive moment that highlights just how talented this group truly are.

Other personal favourites include She'll Come Down When She's Ready, My Sympathy, and the record's haunting closer Boy in the Mirror. The truth, however, is this…if you're not experiencing Jacarandas in its entirety, you're seriously missing a trick! A superb album from start to finish!
