Powers of the Monk’s Sleepy Fields Is the Perfect Sonic Daydream
I had to dig deep into my archives, but I was certain I'd come across Detroit-based duo Powers of the Monk before. And then it hit me - Icarus - of course! As one of my top tunes last year, rediscovering it felt like bumping into an old friend. A lush, folky, and dreamy old friend.
I'm ashamed to admit that I somehow let David s. Monk and CasSondra “Pontiac” Powers fall off my sonic map. But, as soon as Sleepy Fields came across my proverbial desk, I knew I had the chance to atone.
Serving as the pair's brand new single, Sleepy Fields is a light, hazy daydream. Gentle, luminous, and utterly serene, it wastes no time dipping the listener into a sea of mellow magic - immersing you in its slow, shimmering orbit.
Powers' hypnotic vocal performance only adds more sun-soaked glow to the track, and before you know it, four minutes have swept past you - and the world outside has faded. For a brief moment in time, it's just you and Sleepy Fields, and it's perfect.
Joined by John O'Reilly Jr. on drums, David and CasSondra have concocted one of the most soothing songs I've recently come across. And I swear I’ll never let Powers of the Monk drift from my memory again.
