Retro Sounds and Joyful Energy Collide on Magdi Aboul-Kheir’s Hypnotic Album Yesterday's Future

"This one is pure fun," admits German-based composer Magdi Aboul-Kheir as he reflects on his brand new album, Yesterday's Future. A nine-track high-speed trip down memory lane, Magdi's latest release is packed with energy and colour, beautifully drenched in a sea of 80s synths, punchy drum machines, and soaring electric guitars. Retro-infused, yet bursting with forward momentum, Yesterday's Future is proof that nostalgia doesn't always belong in the past.

The aptly titled Past Is Calling sets the scene: hypnotic, atmospheric, and all-consuming. It's a wonderfully expansive and intelligent opener, before the focus shifts to Machines' Gym - a haunting and evocative composition that very much stays with you long after the final note.

Endorphine Wave is an unpredictable little number. Refreshingly original and always keeping the listener on their toes, there's a playfulness and a sense of freedom to the tune that just works.

Other personal favourites included the alluring sounds of Pulsraum, the record's lush title track, and the utterly genius closer, Life's Journey. That said, with so much going on across Yesterday's Future, it feels completely unfair to start picking favourites. It's a rollercoaster from start to finish, and it deserves your undivided attention!
