Rusty Reid Surprises with a Genius Cover of Kacey Musgraves' Oh, What A World
I've followed the work of Seattle-based singer/songwriter Rusty Reid for many years, but never in my wildest dreams did I imagine he'd be covering a Kacey Musgraves tune. Then again, Rusty has always been a musician who marches to the beat of his own drum.
Lone Stardust (Masterworks of Texas Songwriters) is a nineteen-track collection of cover songs - each written by a songwriter with a link to Texas. Rusty released it in April this year, and even months later, I'm still discovering new layers every time I put it on.
Closing out the nineteen-track extravaganza is Rusty's take on Kacey Musgraves' Oh, What A World. As the only female-penned song on the album, it carries a unique weight, and Rusty hits the nail on the head when describing the contrast: "Kacey's version is rather airy and surreal; I tried to keep it more grounded."
Rich, warm, and full of emotion, Rusty's reimagining of Oh, What A World provides the perfect closing note for the record. It’s a sweeping celebration of life's natural wonders, human connection, and gratitude for existence. And I'm pretty certain that if Kacey Musgraves were to hear this cover, she'd be just as charmed with it as I am! Superb stuff, yet again!
