Sunlight Finds Lateral Root Operating in a Cinematic and Weightless Space

Released back in 2020, Sunlight is the work of Bristol-based multi-instrumentalist, producer, and composer Tom Quick. Performing under the moniker Lateral Root, Tom has crafted hundreds of tracks for TV and other media, yet Sunlight is the only tune you'll find on his Spotify account. Why? I honestly couldn't tell you! All I know is that it's a song that’s completely taken hold of me. Immersive, cinematic, and ethereal, it's just an absolute gem from start to finish!

Showcasing a unique recording process whereby Tom combines analogue synths, computer software, and outboard hardware, Sunlight drifts with an almost weightless quality. It's light and airy and almost meditative - with layers of warm textures slowly washing over you.

A song conceived during the COVID-19 lockdowns, Sunlight emerged from a period of introspection and longing while Tom was separated from loved ones. And, though it feels wrong to say it out loud, that pause on the world undoubtedly gave rise to some of the most sincere music of our times. Sunlight included.

Recorded in the artist's personal studio and inspired by heavyweights like Rival Consoles, Floating Points, Four Tet, Ólafur Arnalds, and Robag Wruhme, Lateral Root's composition invites listeners to slow down, breathe, and fully inhabit its space. Pure perfection!
